BOBSC Bulletin: BOBSC News on Snowfrills and Sheffield B Grade Meets

 

25 Swimmers took part in the City of Sheffield Swim Squad "Snowfrills" long course gala held at Ponds Forge on the 22 and 23 November 2014.

The squad collected 11 medals and amassed 56 long course PB's. Barnsley's top medallist was 10 year old Abigail Miles who collected Gold Medals in 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 50m breaststroke; Silver Medals in 100m freestyle and 200m IM; and a Bronze Medal in 100 butterfly. Abigail was supported by 11 year old Harriet Ostrowski-Jones with a Bronze Medal in the 50m breaststroke; 12 year old Elizabeth Safonkina with Silver Medal in 200m backstroke and Bronze Medal in 50m breaststroke; and 17 year old Rebecca Sanderson with Gold Medal in the 200m butterfly and Bronze Medal in the 50m backstroke.

Top of the PB list was Elizabeth Safonkina with 9 followed by Matthew Selous and Abigail Miles with 6 each and 5 each for Georgia Lee, Harriet Ostrowski-Jones, Ella Waller, Nathan Billingham and Thomas Stather.

On 29 November a squad of 30 swimmers took part in the Sheffield City Swimming Club B Grade long course gala which was also held at Ponds Forge. The swimmers collected a further 13 medals with 9 year old Macy Yoxall claiming Gold Medal in the 200m IM; 13 year old Megan Lee claiming Gold Medal in 100m breaststroke and Silver Medal in the 50m breaststroke; 11 year old Harriet Ostrowski-Jones with Silver Medals in 200m IM and 100m butterfly; 9 year old Lola Yoxall with Silver Medal in 50m freestyle and Bronze Medal in 50m backstroke; 10 year old Kalum Smart with Silver Medal in 50m butterfly and Bronze Medal in 50m backstroke; 11 year old Sam Charlesworth with Silver Medal in 100m breaststroke; 9 year old Georgia Lee with Bronze Medal in 50m freestyle; 12 year old Ella Waller with Bronze Medal in 100m freestyle; and 12 year old Lucy Hatfield with Bronze Medal in 100m breaststroke.

In addition the swimmers achieved a further 76 long course PB's with some swimmers eclipsing the PB's set only the previous week at Snowfrills. Top of the PB list were Kalum Smart and 12 year old Millie Hamby both with 6 each followed by 10 year old Neve Wilkie with 5.

HEADLINES FROM ASANER IN SUNDERLAND……..

Thomas Speed sets a new Yorkshire Boys 50m breaststroke short course record…..

In the Age Group Championships Abigail Miles is the 10 year North East Regional Champion in 3 events.... Abigail also wins 2 Bronze Medals..... Libby Turner also wins a Bronze Medal…………

In the Senior/Junior Championships   Thomas Speed is also the Junior North East Regional Champion in 3 events .... and picks up a Silver and a Bronze.....

Ten swimmers from Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club achieved the qualifying times and competed in the British Gas ASA North East Region Senior/Junior Championships (25m) 2014 and the British Gas ASA North East Region Age Group Championships (25m) 2014 which were held on the 6-7 December 2014 at Sunderland Aquatic Centre.

The Age Group Championships are for boys aged 10-14 and for girls aged 10-13. The events are won on a heat declared basis.

In the Senior/Junior Championships the Juniors (15 year old boys and 14 year old girls) swim with the Seniors (boys 16 and over and girls 15 and over). The swimmers compete in heats and the top ten race off in finals. The Juniors swim for medals in their age category (irrespective of whether they reach a final) and can gain also gain a further medal in the same event if they finish in the top three of a final (against swimmers of all ages).

In the Age Group Championships seven swimmers swam in 36 events achieving 26 short course PB's and winning 6 medals.

Lewis Baker, Sam Charlesworth and Elizabeth Safonkina made their ASANER debuts.

Lewis Baker and Abigail Miles (both 10) qualified for and swam in 11 events each.

Abigail gained an outstanding top ten finish in all 11 events winning Gold Medals in 400IM, 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke and Bronze Medals in 400m freestyle and 200m IM. Her other finishes were 4th in 200m butterfly; 5th in 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly; and 6th in 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke. Overall Abigail achieved 10 PB's from her 11 swims.

Lewis gained highly creditable top ten finishes in 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly and 100m breaststroke; had six other results in the top twenty; and achieved 6 PB's.

In the 11 year category Sam Charlesworth finished 16th in the 100m breaststroke with a PB; Jessica Richardson finished 17th in the 200m butterfly with a PB; and Harriet Ostrowski-Jones finished 17th in both 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke with a PB in each and 20th in 100m backstroke.

In the 12 year category Elizabeth Safonkina (in her first regional championships) finished 11th with a PB in the 100m backstroke.

In the 13 year category Libby Turner also qualified in 11 events, swimming in 8 of them and having an excellent weekend winning a Bronze Medal in the 100m backstroke with 6th places in 200m backstroke and 100m breaststroke; 7th place in 200m IM; 8th places in 100m and 200m freestyle and 200m breaststroke; and 9th place in 400m freestyle. Overall Libby achieved 5 PB's.

In the Senior/Junior Championships three swimmers swam in 12 events achieving 10 short course PB's and winning 5 medals.

15 year old Holly Milnes finished 28th in 50m butterfly, 43rd in 50m freestyle and 58th in 100m freestyle with 2 PB's. Claire Berry also 15 finished 28th in 50m backstroke and 62nd in 50m freestyle with a PB in each event.

Meanwhile 15 year old Thomas Speed enjoyed another superb weekend winning Junior Gold Medals in 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke; a Junior Bronze Medal in the 50m backstroke; and a further Silver Medal for 2nd place in the 50m breaststroke final (with the senior swimmers).

In the 50m breaststroke Thomas set a new Yorkshire Boys short course record with a time of 29.79 beating the previous time set in 1996!

Dear All,

 

It is that time again when we will be asking for candidates to come forward to be Club Captains.  We are looking for 1 girl and 1 boy who are 15 and over to take over the captain's role.  These people should be able to;

• Be a representative of the swimmers of the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club.

• Lead the swimmers in representing the club.

• Show great team spirit and have ideas to generate team spirit throughout the year.

• Be a link between the swimmers, the committee and coaches.

Candidates are asked to send letters of application to the team manager, Craig Lee, on behalf of the committee by Wednesday 3^rd December.

Voting will take place on the weekend of the 12-14^th December.

The results will be announced at the Club presentation on the 27^th December.

To all our Members

 

The sprint is only now two weeks away, could anyone who has put their names at side of items on the various hamper lists please bring to Dearneside on Friday the 28th of November if possible. Thomas Speed has achieved 3 times in the 50,100 & 200m breastroke to qualify
for the british championships due to take place at the Olympic pool in
London next April!

Thomas is ranked 1st in the 50m breastroke for his age group so far!!!

BOBSC Bulletin: Squad Expectations

 

Hi all,

 

As some of you may be aware I have been working towards creating new targets and goals for the club since my appointment in February.  as I was appointed in the middle of the season it was not the right time to make any major changes to the squads.

 

Now we are at the start of the 2014-15 season I have brought in the new squad criteria now known as squad expectations that all swimmers should be achieving in order to continue with their progression in the long term.

 

The biggest changes are that there will no longer be an A1 squad. The squad will now be known as A squad and the SJD squad will now be known as the Youth squad.  All other squad titles will remain the same.

 

The criteria is based on the British swimming LTAD system. Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is about achieving optimal training, competition and recovery throughout an athlete's career, particularly in relation to the important growth and development years of young people. 

 

If a long term approach to training is not adopted there is likely to be a plateau in performance, when growth and development slows significantly. Which for some swimmers may result in their performances getting worse.  

 

 

A swimmers progressions through the squads will be based on the expectations from the squad and discussed in the monthly coaches meeting.  all movements will be based on the coaches discretion.

 

Please could all parents and swimmers read through the expectations of the relevant squad carefully.

BOBSC Bulletin: BOBSC News

2014 City of Leeds Grade 2 Meet

Eleven swimmers from the Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club competed in the City of Leeds SC October Level 2 short course Meet held at the John Charles Centre for Sport on 25 and 26^th October 2014.

Reaching the start list was an achievement in itself as the meet was over-subscribed and over 1,200 swims were rejected.

The swimmers again demonstrated their continuing improvement and achieved a further 23 personal best times.

The 9 and 10 year old swimmers were awarded medals on a heat declared basis whilst the 11 year and upward swimmers swam in heats with the top ten in age categories 11/12, 13/14 and 15 and over swimming again in the finals.

Alexander Tikhonov (9 years) won gold medals in the 200m breaststroke and 200m IM and a silver medal in the 100m backstroke. Georgia Lee (9 years) also won bronze medal in 50m breaststroke.

In the 13/14 age group Libby Turner (13) reached the finals of the 100m backstroke finishing 5^th, the 200m IM finishing 7^th, and the final of the 200m breaststroke.

In the 15 and over category Thomas Speed reached the final of the 50m breaststroke finishing 9th. At 15 he was by far the youngest in a final that was dominated by swimmers from Loughborough University.

New short course personal best times were achieved by:

Alex Tikhonov 100m free, 50m back, 100m back, 200m breast, 200m IM

Ben Nutt 50m fly

Greg Lugton 200m free

Tom Speed 50m breast

Elizabeth Safonkina 200m free, 200m breast, 50m breast, 100m back, 100m breast, 100m fly

Georgia Lee 50m breast, 100m breast

Harriet Ostrowski-Jones 100m free, 100m breast

Jessica Richardson 100m fly, 200m back

Libby Turner 50m back, 100m back

Phoebe McNicholas 200m breast

This was an extremely tough meet and the sessions were long with swimmers racing up to 7pm in the evening.  The swimmers, although tired showed so much determination at this high level meet and swam exceptionally.

REMINDER

 

Rotherham Metro ‘A’ and ‘B’ Long Course Graded Meet, to be held Saturday 17^th and Sunday 18^th January 2015, at Ponds Forge Sheffield.

 

Please Note:   9 year olds are not allowed to swim 100m events, in accordance with ASA recommendation

 

Cost of entries: £5.50

 

Please hand completed entry forms to Julia Moody and payment to Marie Baker.

Anyone who has any queries re the above meet please see me at any training session or contact me via e-mail competitions@bobsc.co.uk

 

BOBSC closing date is Friday 31st October 2014

ASA England Programmes Education and Development Days (EPEDD) 2014

England Programmes National Coach Development Workshops 2014-2015

Many congratulations to our Head Coach Carly Herbert who has been invited by the England Talent Development Programme to be a programme coach on Libby Turner's ASA England Programmes Education and Development Days (EPEDD) 2014 being held on Sunday 2 November 2014. Carly will work under The England Programmes Officer and a Lead Skills Coach. The invitation has been received in recognition of the tremendous work that Carly has carried out on behalf of our club and our swimmers.

In addition Carly has also been selected to take part in the England Programmes National Coach Workshops 2014/2015. These workshops will take place on 16 November and 20 December 2014 and 11 January 2015 at both Loughborough and Millfield School. Only fifteen coaches were successful in being selected from the whole of England and again this is testimony to Carly's work and the success of our swimmers in the pool.

Well done Carly!

BOBSC Bulletin: Volunteers Needed

 

Dear Members

 

The Christmas Sprint is nearly upon us and we need your help.

 

We run the event on volunteers and couldn't do it without the.

 

We need as many parents to help as possible to enable it to run smoothly and for the Visiting Teams and our own Children to have a fabulous day and swim

 

 

 

we need volunteers to

Marshall the Children

Man the Security on Doors Upstairs and Downstairs

Team Managers to work with the coaches and children on poolside

Trophy managers - to work on the trophy tables and sort medals and trophies out

Front Door staff to take the money and sell the programmes

Drinks People to keep staff and volunteers hydrated throughout the day

Sweetie table sellars

Tombola Stall Holders

Runners

 

If anybody would please please be willing to help it would be very gratefully appreciated.

 

If you fell able to help could you please let me know so I can talk you through the process and take your name

BOBSC Bulletin: Xmas Hampers

 

Dear Members

 

As you are probably aware we are nearing one of our biggest Fund Raising Events for the Club the Christmas Sprint.

 

We have for years put Hampers of various description up for our raffles prizes along with the main prize.  These hampers are usually donated by our very generous members. This weekend we will be putting lists of these hampers up on the Notice Boards at Dearneside.  There will be various items which we would like to put in them, and a space at the side for names of people who feel they would like to donate.

 

If you could help with a donation however big or small it would be gratefully appreciated as any Fund Raising helps us to keep the Club running and purchase things which the members need for training ect.

 

If you do kindly decide to donate and write your name on any of the lists, when you  wish to hand it in you can either hand to either Christine or Nick Mawby or if there is a Committee member available who would take it from you please hand to them

 

Once again thank you for your continued support and lets make 2014 Christmas sprint the best yet

BOBSC Bulletin: REMINDER BOBSC 19th Christmas Sprint Meet

 

REMINDER - CLOSING DATE FOR BOBSC CHRISTMAS SPRINT IS THIS FRIDAY 24^TH OCTOBER

 

 

 

Please find attached entry form and information for BOBSC 19^th Christmas Sprint Meet, to be held Saturday 6^th December 2014 at Ponds Forge ISC Sheffield.

 

As this is our own meet we encourage all swimmers  9 years and over to attend.

 

9 year olds can swim all 50m events plus 200IM

 

Any BOBSC swimmer faster than the cut off times can swim for time only.  Please indicate time only swims on your entry form.
