BOBSC Bulletin: 2016

Hello All,

As 2016 draws to an end I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the year we leave behind.

2016 has been a mix bag of events for the club from welcoming new swimmers to saying good bye to old, but overall the team spirit to succeed and drive forward has remained as strong as ever.

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate each and every swimmer on their achievements this year, big or small, competitive or non competitive, each swimmer has had their goals and challenges.

From our success at the Yorkshire long course championships, to Olympic trials, BOBSC Summer sizzler, Nationals, winter Yorkshires,  Short course Regionals to our first time meets for our promising youngsters at the Snow storm meet we have kept Borough of Barnsley swimming on the map and achieving beyond expectation!

This year we have achieved more qualifiers, more personal bests and medals at major meets then the club has ever seen as a result from the swimmers hard work and dedication.

We have truly come together as club from the tremendous work our volunteers have done to hold us together and I'm sure everyone will agree when I say without them we would not function!  Thank you!!! You truly are super hero's!

On a whole 2016 has been another success for the club showing continuous development and talent.  I would like to say a very big well done to all the swimmers on their superb performance and hard work throughout the year, and to the parents for taxiing them to sessions and enduring long, long meets! (I know deep down you love it really!)

Well done everyone!  Here's to more success in 2017!!!

Have a very merry Christmas everyone and a happy new year!

Kind regards,

Carly Herbert

HEAD COACH

BOBSC Bulletin: Reminder Special AGM 21st December 2016

All

Following on from the email last week, this is a quick reminder about the SGM as detailed below,  Sarah will be at the fun night on Sunday and also training on Tuesday morning should you wish to pass her any votes, if you are unable to see her at these times but would like to pass your vote on please email secretary@bobsc.co.uk to see if you can make any meeting arrangements..

Many thanks

BOBSC Committee

Good afternoon

The committee of BoBSC are calling a Special General Meeting on Wednesday 21st December at Hoyland Leisure Centre at 6:30pm.

The SGM is called in respect of the below resolution, this is not a change to the club constitution.  As such there is no requirement to have an SGM but in order for all our members to be part of the final decision, the committee have opted to open the decision to a membership vote.

“The members of Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club, entitled to attend and vote in general meeting, do hereby authorise the committee of Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club to contract with Barnsley Premier Leisure on the basis of the Heads of Terms attached to this email, together with any other ancillary appendices as may be required to give effect to the arrangements set out in the Heads of Terms between Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club and Barnsley Premier Leisure’

We attach a copy of the Heads of Terms and a FAQ document for your perusal prior to the meeting, a summary of the position is below.

Appendices are in the process of being generated but those relating to job descriptions will come out of the staff liason process.

In order to be entitled to vote you must be an ASA member aged 16 or over.

We recognise that not all members eligible to vote will be able to attend on the day, therefore we are happy to accept a written vote in a sealed envelope signed across the seal.  Please also put you name on it, in order that we can ensure only one vote is obtained per member, these will be opened on the night of the SGM in line with other votes cast, at which point if you are in attendance we can remove the envelope.  Please pass these to Sarah Valentine-Bull and no one else.

Contract Offering

Per the attached Terms and Conditions BPL will take on coaching and pool hire costs, the coaches will no longer be employed by the club but a management board comprising of 2 BoBSC and 2 BPL will ensure this is appropriately managed.

·        Pool hours will not be reduced, and if anything will increase over time

·        Training time will only be changed if it is considered to be of benefit to all members, parents and most importantly swimmers

·        Coaches will be of an appropriate level with a swimming background

BOBSC will run the competitive side of the club and additional training sessions (eg long course) as seen fit

BPL are fully aware that this will run at a loss during the first 18 months and are not going to over subscribe swimmers to the training program, but will increase swimmers in the link program until they are fit for competitive training.   BPL main driver is to ensure that the Barnsley area continues to be provided with a competitive swimming arena.

Should you have any questions please raise these prior to the meeting where possible in order that an answer can be circulated to all members

Please could ASA members confirm your attendance / non-attendance to  Sarah via secretary@BoBSC.co.uk

Kind regards

BoBSC Committee

BOBSC Bulletin: BPL update and potential vote

All

Following on from our meetings in respect of BPL, we would like to give you an update of the position.

After lots of discussions between the executive committee and BPL, and subsequently the committee we are now in a position that we have key terms for the partnership which have given us what we consider to be appropriate protection for our club.

BPL have now instructed their solicitors to draw up an agreement between both parties.

This agreement is likely to be with us by early this week at which point the committee will review and if in agreement will put this to a vote by the members in line with the constitution we will hold a special general meeting.

In order to vote on the future of the club you must be an Asa member and 16 years or over.

If you are a parent of an existing swimmer at BOBSC and would like to become an Asa category 3 member and exercise a vote at the special general meeting"

please see Adrian Ostrowski or Kerry Tupman by the 3rd of December 2016 to compete the form and remit £10.60.

Kind regards

BOBSC Bulletin: Items for Hamper

ITEMS FOR HAMPER - CHRISTMAS SPRINT

Dear Parents/Guardians

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for kindly adding your names to the Christmas Hamper Lists which have been passed around the club.  As you are aware the sprint is nearly upon us and at the moment I have not collected all donated items in for the Hampers.  I am hoping to get the Majority of them collected this weekend to enable me to assemble the hampers before the 2nd of December.  I won't be at training this Friday as I have a physio appointment.  I am intending to be at Training however on Saturday at Dearneside from about 4.30 and then also at Hoyland on Sunday from 5.45ish.  If you can kindly bring them to one of these sessions it would be very much appreciated.  If you are not going to be at either of these and wish to arrange a time more convenient to yourselves do not hesitate to contact me and I will arrange to meet you.

Once again thank you for your generosity.

Kind Regards

BOBSC Bulletin: Another Message from the Press Officer - swim hats, Barnsley Chronicle & Adverts

Dear all

A reminder that the swim hat design competition comes to an end on Friday 4th November.  In case you have misplaced your sheets a new one is attached and Mr Mick (or Adrian W) is looking forward to receiving your entries.  Also we have secured space at a community art gallery being held in November in Barnsley town centre on the 18th & 19th November. All entries will be displayed for members of the public to view! If any of you possess the artistic skills and have the time to create a mounted display of the entries please let me know (press@bobsc.co.uk)

Finally, we are selling advertising space within our Christmas Sprint gala programme.  If you know of any company that would like to buy some space please let me know or feel free to pass my contact details on (press@bobsc.co.uk).  We are expecting around 500 swimmers to attend the gala from the Yorkshire area.  The cost for an advert will be £50 for an A4 and £30 for A5 (half page) and can be printed in colour.  THE DEADLINE FOR ADVERTS IS FRIDAY 18TH NOVEMBER

After every swimming gala we always let the Barnsley Chronicle know of the successes of our swimmers.  In order to give our articles that extra bit of interest we are keen to hear from swimmers or parents about their experience or particular successes. So if a PB was smashed, it was your first gala or some other newsworthy activity occurred please let me know.  I am also happy to receive photos of swimmers but please note that pictures cannot be passed onto the Chronicle unless a current parental release form has been provided for all swimmers in the photograph. Parents / carers, if you have not completed a consent form for the 2016 / 2017 season please can you do so – the form is attached.

Happy colouring

BOBSC Bulletin: Scarborough A&B Gala 2017

Dear Parents

It's that time again when we are organising the annual Scarborough trip on the 16th -18th June 2017.

For many years we have been organising a residential trip to Scarborough and we are looking to rebook the Labaia hotel for the weekend.  We leave early afternoon on Friday afternoon and we return Sunday evening.

Swimmers can stay at the hotel without parents if they are 11 or over.

Families wishing to stay at the hotel need to talk to me to see if we have family rooms for your stay.

The weekend consists of bed and breakfast for both days and an evening meal on Friday.  We also get packed lunches for both days.  Children will have to pay for their meal out on the Saturday.

The price will be £90

Deposits need to be paid by November 13th and fully paid by 31st January.

This offer is addition to the gala and swimmers can make their own arrangements if required

The Scarborough meet is a great fun gala and is an A and B grade competition. It's a team building meet and an opportunity to try races that your children have never raced before.  By swimming many races it also keeps them busy.  My recommendation is to swim as many as they can.

Please let me know if you want to book your places.

Thanks

Craig

BOBSC Bulletin: Bottle Flipping

All

You may be aware of the latest kids game called bottle flipping, there are many videos in YouTube.

Unfortunately this has spread to both poolside and changing rooms with swimmers using their drinks bottles to flip.

We have had a few instances of near misses and more worryingly times when children and adults have been hit with the bottles.

Could you please advise your children not to partake in bottle flipping whilst at poolside.

Many thanks

TO ALL MEMBERS.

You may recall our email in May as below regarding pick up after session,  as the dark nights are upon us could we please issue a gentle reminder.

As a club we do not expect every parent to sit through every training session, but we do expect parents to leave some contact details with someone at the pool. This can be another parent, committee member or the coach in charge.

Also when returning to collect your swimmer we expect you to be there on time, ideally inside the building before the end of the session.

BOBSC Bulletin: Coaching Cover Parent Update

All

As you may be aware over the last few days A and A2 sessions have been covered for Carly by our other coaches.

Due to an unexpected but successful operation last weekend, Carly is currently recuperating at home and should be back with us in around 2 weeks.

This obviously will have an unfortunate knock on to some sessions and gala coverage this weekend which Carly was due to attend.

Throughout the Yorkshires our Team Manager will be on pool side to look after the children along with a female BoBSC DBS checked member of the team, on Saturday Misha will be joining us immediately after her compulsory lifeguard training at around 11:30, we hope to have a similar position for Sunday and will confirm to the relevant swimmers in the next couple of days.

Other coaches are supporting in covering sessions in order to keep the club running smoothly, we apologise for any inconvenience but are working hard to ensure there is minimal disruption.

I hope you understand the situation.

Kind regards

BOBSC Bulletin: Parents Meetings

All

Over recent months we have been approached by BPL to give us a position where they will work more closely with us and to support the club as we move forward and grow.  We have had a number of discussions with them and now have a firm proposal to discuss with you as members.

We will have a number of meetings next week which you as parents are more than welcome to attend 1 of and would like you to be honest and give us some clear queries / questions to present back to BPL should you have any.

Please be aware that staff of BPL are not all aware of this proposal and as such we would appreciate you keeping any discussions within the club.

If you are unable to attend but would like to know more please contact a member of the Executive Committee for further information.

Could you possibly advise if you have accidently picked up a kit bag as follows on Sunday from the baby changing room by mistake, it was left by an individual when their swimming finished at 4pm.

It is a blue kit bag containing a red speedo pull buoy, pink Maru kick board, speedo heel-less flippers, blue hand paddles and a red speedo snorkel.

BOBSC Bulletin: Use of mobile devices and social media

To all parents/guardians/swimmers

Further to my email below sent on 18th April 2016;
To all parents/guardians/swimmers
In line with ASA recommendations  as well as BPL requirements, please can I remind you all that mobile devices with the ability to take photographs are not permitted to be used on poolside or in the changing facilities. This includes their use even if not actually taking photographs. There is an exception to this at official competitions if the photography record book has been signed.

May I please remind you all of the ASA safeguarding regulations which are in place to safeguard all of our children and vulnerable adults; The use of mobile devices with the ability to take photographs and/or video are not permitted to be used on poolside or in the changing facilities. This includes their use even if not actually taking photographs. There is an exception to this at official competitions if the photography record book has been signed. By signing the photography consent you are agreeing to taking photographs and/or videos for personal viewing only. I am aware that as parents we are proud to share our children's achievements, however the posting of photographs and videos on social media is not permitted where there are other children visible without firstly gaining consent from the parent or guardian of those children. This is inclusive of children in the race, waiting behind the blocks, in the background on poolside or merely spectating. The ASA are very clear on these rules and they can be viewed in the ASA Wavepower document which is available to view online at http://www.swimming.org/asa/clubs-and-members/safeguarding-children/

I have been made aware that there have been videos uploaded to social media following Friday evenings club championships gala which include children without  parental consent. Please can I ask that these videos are taken down without delay.

Swimmers will be allowed to use their phones or tablets to listen to music or play games etc whilst they are waiting for their heat, however the camera on their device will need to be covered by a sticker or tape.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Regards

Jayne Smart

BOBSC Club Welfare Officer
